The commons

A video room that is always open. Walk in and talk about Common Lisp with whoever is there.

Your browser will ask before it uses your microphone or camera, and you come in with both switched off.

Or open it in a tab of its own, or in the Jitsi Meet app: https://meet.common-lisp.net/commons

What it is for

Common Lisp: the language, its implementations and libraries, your project, a question you are stuck on, what you are reading. Come in to ask, to answer, or to listen. There is no schedule. At a quiet hour you may find nobody there; stay a while, or say in #commonlisp on Libera.Chat that you are in.

How it works

  • You need no account. Type a name on the way in, or none.
  • One participant is always there: the room keeper, an automated seat that holds the room open. It has no microphone and no camera and takes no part. Once a minute, while anyone is in the room, it keeps a small picture of what the room shows.
  • The admins of common-lisp.net and others who hold an account on the meeting server are the room's moderators. They can mute someone or remove them.
  • Be civil, and keep to the subject. This is the community's room.

What is kept

No sound and no video, unless someone in the room asks for a recording and the whole room is told. Because the room is open to anyone, the keeper keeps a small still picture of the room once a minute while people are in it. The pictures can be seen by the admins of common-lisp.net only, are looked at when someone reports a problem, and are deleted after a day. The server also notes when people come into the room and when it empties, and tells the admins, so that somebody responsible knows the room is in use. The privacy page has the detail.

A room of your own

For a meeting of a project or a group, open a room of your own: go to https://meet.common-lisp.net/ followed by a name you choose, and log in when it asks. That takes an account on the meeting server: ask the admins for one. Anyone you give the address to can then join without one.

Meeting recording service

There are good reasons to record a meeting: a talk, a design discussion, something others will want to see. Anyone in the commons can ask for it: type !record in the room's chat, and !stop to end it. The room keeper starts the recorder and says so in the chat; the meeting server shows everyone the recording mark and announces it aloud. Nothing is recorded that the whole room has not been told about, and anyone who would rather not be recorded can leave first.

  • A recording costs 10 mites from the community pot for each half hour.
  • When it ends, the keeper posts its address in the chat. The video can be downloaded from there for 24 hours, by anyone who has the address, and is then deleted.
  • To keep it longer, its page takes 20 mites for each gigabyte and 30 days.
  • A recording ends by itself when the room empties, and after two hours.

Prices in mites, and what a mite costs, may change. In a room of your own, the meeting server's own Record button does the same; the admins are sent the recording's address and pass it on to you.

Report a problem in the room

Someone abusing the room, or the room not working? This goes straight to the admins' phones.

What you saw or heard, and about when. If the room is being abused right now, say so first.

A person reads every request. Your address is used to answer you and for nothing else.
